Digital Product Design

Allow me to introduce myself...

With over 10 years of commercial experience working with numerous companies and their digital products I have developed a wide range of skills that allow me to scope a project, business and it's users and deliver engaging digital products. Beyond UX I also take a client and project through it's visual design phase and deliver responsive front end prototypes that I user test on the numerous gizmo’s and gadgets out there today.

After graduating from Camberwell College of Arts way back at the beginning of the millennium when the dot-com bubble burst I took an ‘extended soujourn’ around New Zealand, France and California persuing the outdoors and teaching many of the activities one can experience in them. Returning from travels in 2004 I settled into the online industry as a digital designer for clients such as ASOS, Tesco and Sony PlayStation. Since then I have worked client-side and at agencies and have continued to develop my design skills, encompassing visual design, user experience and front end coding in order to deliver considered products and campaigns.

When I'm not at work you’ll find me out running and biking on the hills or woods (desperately trying to beat people on Strava) and competing in numerous events across the UK and Europe including ToughMudder and The Beachyhead Marathon (occasionally dressed as a superhero). When I’m not doing that I’ll be enjoying a good local ale and some music with friends. Due to the demands of the above you won't find my thoughts on Twitter but you will find me speaking at UX Brighton (youtube) or at Parkrun most Saturdays.

Testimonials

"Ben is an absolute pleasure to work with. I have a policy of hiring people who challenge me and Ben is always ready to help the team to push a design to the next level of excellence. He's equally at home with blue sky innovating as he is optimising existing experiences. He conducted one of the most thorough pieces of research into payment page best practices I have ever come across - and it worked! He has a natural capability of drawing the most out of research and getting to the heart of a problem. He also single handedly designed a new wesbite UI for us from the ground up. He's also a thoroughly nice guy to work with. He's firmly on my list of people to look up when I need UX expertise in the future."

David Jonnes, Product Director at LowCostTravelGroup

"Working with Ben has been a pleasure at all points. His ability to breakdown our core business needs and translate these into creative and innovative solutions is an enormous benefit. By taking the time to fully understand our company, it's services, customers and ethos, Ben was able to bring new ideas and suggestions to the table - they were always on brand and incredibly well structured. The acute attention to detail that was given at every step of the process of both the responsive project and the many subsequent projects, meant we felt consistently well appraised of the work and crucially in control, the importance of which cannot be understated for an organisation of our size. The results of the work produced went above and beyond our expectations and I would recommend Ben without hesitation."

Omar Mohamed, Director at Work the World

"Ben has a rare skill set in a designer, the ability to be able to code as well as take a creative brief and come back with something better than you could even have imagined - a god send to marketing people!"

Dominique Nicholas,
Head of Customer Communications at Harrods

"I worked with Ben at The Unit as Head of UX. He expertly uncovers the project unknowns, replacing it with a fantastic, business centric user experience design. I've been inclined to let him lead client workshops because he's excellent at extrapolating important information and facilitating groups of senior stakeholders."

Paul Swain, Head of UX at The Unit

"Ben is a very pragmatic, highly-skilled designer who integrated really well into our team. He was able to communicate clearly to all relevant stakeholders, particularly helping translate complex management briefs into commercially viable designs. Ben has a finely-tuned attention to detail and raised the bar on quality for our business. Beyond that Ben is a genuinely honest, friendly guy who I would happily re-employ and work with again."

Nish Kukadia, CEO at Secretsales.com

"Ben is not only a great UX Designer he is also a fantastic project lead. He has a great understanding of project management, design and development which allows him to manage and communicate all phases of a project with both the team and client. His attention to detail and understanding of how important both the business and user needs are results in a product that always delivers above client expectations. I have learnt a lot working with Ben and his knowledge of user focused design never fails to impress me and I hope to have the chance to work with him again in the future."

Rob Dove, Head of Development at The Unit

"As Creative Director and Head of Production for Secretsales we brought Ben in to redesign and deliver our new eCommerce site. Not only did he lead the design project he also stepped up to aid in its front end development and organise the development team throughout the process. With this new site, the company successfully sought investment which significantly aided it in solidifying it for the future. I found Ben both professional and fun to work with - he always had good ideas which he knew how to deliver and he liaised well with all departments to make successful projects go live."

Paul Davies, Creative Director at Secretsales

"Ben's greatest skill is to take a complex brief and produce a design that packs a punch while removing the clutter. When we rebuilt the Secretsales.com website it was vital that we produced a clean and open site that our customers would instantly understand and enjoy using. Ben's talent for turning the most complex user journey into a simple and engaging interface, coupled with his technical ability meant the development team were able to hit milestones and exceed stake-holder expectations every time."

David Wellock, Head of Web Development at Cactus Language Training

"Ben takes an intelligent approach to design, understanding the product, the audience and the goals of the campaign before proposing solutions. This well-structured approach always resulted in solutions which met customer and business expectations and most importantly performed well both now and in the long-term."

James Stone, EMEA CRM Manager at Sony Entertainment Network
